Why Your Clients Don’t “Get” What You Do — and How to Fix It
You know how your work can really help people, and you’re passionate about it. You’ve done extra certifications and think it’s the coolest stuff ever.
Why, then, is it so dang hard to express this when someone asks what you do? You could go with the title of your discipline, but that lacks depth. You could explain your process, but that takes too long. So…??
Healing outside the conventional model is hard to explain. First of all, you’re up against the conventional paradigm: symptomsdiagnosistreatment, where everything is very structured and labeled conveniently. You need a Dx to get your Tx. People don’t understand that in the holistic, energy-healing, alternative medicine world, practitioners are symptom-focused, with the intention of fixing the problem at the root—as opposed to creating a label and offering a convenient pharmaceutical or surgical Band-Aid for the expressed symptoms.
It’s a whole other world.
Then, on top of that, the treatment is often not in the form of a convenient pill. There are protocols, or exercises, or sugar pillules, or repeat visits that are hard to fathom if you don’t understand how this philosophy works.
WHEW. That’s a lot.
But it’s not really anything to get down about. In my opinion, it’s so much more special. And nuanced. And INTERESTING! Aside from just believing fully in the superiority of holistic healthcare, I am totally fascinated by all the incredible things that people do, and the breadth of knowledge they draw upon, to heal others.
Ok, so let’s discuss HOW to talk about what you do so you can target your ideal clients and impress all the conventional people around you (LOL):
Focus on the OUTCOME of your treatment.
That’s it. It’s really that simple.
So, for example, instead of saying that you’re a chiropractor and applied kinesiologist who uses muscle testing to determine the appropriate vector for a chiropractic adjustment, and that you know 7 different chiropractic techniques, you can say, “I help people to get out of pain without drugs or surgery.”
That’s relatable, and those poor souls who are in pain will sit up and take notice.
Here is what you can do to figure out your message:
- Work out who your ideal client is
- Name their “before” state
- Name their ideal state
- Put it all together by saying, “I help ________ go from ________ to ________” and you can add an extra detail at the end: length of time it takes, name something they want to avoid, or name something desirable (“easily,” “without burning out,” etc)
